December Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day 30 - Winter Wonderland (or not)

I live in New England, where the only consistent thing about the weather is that you can guarantee it will be inconsistent. We had our big Christmas snow back at the end of November and there isn't any snow coming in the foreseeable future. The closest thing I could get to "Winter Wonderland" frozen puddle out in the field. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. Come mid-January we'll have feet of snow and I'll be really sick of it.

December Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day 27 - Outside Right Now

After Thanksgiving got snowed out and we ended up with a foot of heavy wet snow on the ground, it turned out that we had a brown Christmas this year. So no pretty snow to take pictures of.

December Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day 25 - Morning (Whoops)

So I boned it. I totally forgot to take a picture for the challenge on Christmas Morning. Whoops. I hope you all had a Merry Christmas!

December Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day 24 - Favorite Part of Christmas Eve

Hands down my favorite part of Christmas Eve was the few minutes when we actually had everyone home.

Life These Days

I finally feel like things are starting to settle down after months of craziness. Which is really, really nice.  I've been able to get projects started and finished. That last part is amazing in and of itself. I get a lot of projects started, but finished is something totally different.

December Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day 16 - 21

Day 16 - Nativity Scene

In case you haven't noticed, I'm really behind this week on the photo-a-day challenge.... five days to be exact. It's just been that kind of week with all of the preparations for Christmas, work and some traveling things have just been a bit busier than they have been for a little while. So here are the last six updates which brings me up to date.

December Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day 15 - Favorite Christmas Song

I have to admit, though it might be surprising, I can't stand Have a Holly Jolly Christmas and The Holly and the Ivy. I'm just NOT keen on singing my name over and over again. Apart from that I really do like the majority of the traditional Christmas songs and a few of the contemporary ones. One of my favorites, at the moment, is Joseph's Lullaby by MercyMe.

You can listen to the song HERE

December Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day 13 - Family

Anyone who knows me will tell you, I HATE being in front of the camera. I love taking pictures, but not being in them. However, if you must have your picture taken, it's better to do it with a sibling who's not the least bit camera shy. So my "baby" brother and I spent the morning running around the back yard, taking pictures, freezing and having a marvelous time. We got a ton of goofy pictures, but also ended up with some really nice one, if I'm allowed to say so myself being both the photographer and in them at the same time.

Learning to Let Go

I remember years ago, shortly after I got my horse, I found myself suddenly in a scary situation. My horse bolted when I was getting ready to mount and in that moment every bit of head knowledge I had about horses was long forgotten and natural reactions kicked in. I grabbed the first thing I could reach for, a stirrup, and ended up being dragged a good distance. Even though I "knew" in my head to let him go and catch him after he'd calmed down, everything inside of me said that the only way to control him was to hang on.

Me and My Side-Kick

I have a side-kick, albeit an unintentional and unsolicited one. This little boxer mutt has wormed her way very deeply into our lives and hearts and has to be right in the center of pretty much everything.

December Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day 5 - Temperature Outside

We don't actually have a thermometer outside. And it seemed a little lame to take a picture of the thermometer in the car.  So I was contemplating what do instead. A sign and a tripod and I was all set to go. Unfortunately, using the timer on your camera to take a clear picture doesn't work so great. I couldn't get it to focus on the sign and kept coming out blurry.

December Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day 4 - Joyful

I can't think of a better reason to be joyful than the actual reason for the season.

 Joy to the World
 Lyrics by: Isaac Watts
Joy to the world! the Lord is come;
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare him room,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven and nature sing,
And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing.
Joy to the earth! the Savior reigns;
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.
No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found,
Far as the curse is found,
Far as, far as, the curse is found.
He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders, of His love.

December Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day 3 - RED

Today's challenge was to take a picture of something red, which was easy and difficult all at the same time.... There are so many red things, which one to take a picture of. The coffee mug won out.

December Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day 2 - Your Favorite Christmas Movie

Day two! Unfortunately I didn't have my camera on me so I had to settle for my phone to take a picture. It came out a whole lot grainer than I wanted it to, but it works for the moment.

December Photo-A-Day Challenge: Day 1 -Your View Today

Happy December! I can't believe that it's already time to say that, but my calendar doesn't usually lie to me. For the month of December I found an interesting way to keep me blogging without it being overly time consuming. For the entire 31 days of the month I have a schedule of pictures to take. I'll probably end up posting my pictures every couple of days as opposed to doing it on a daily basis.

So without further ado, Day1!

Recovery Mode

It's over. After six months of preparation, the theatre season is finally over and my life settles back down to a slower, quieter daily routine. In so many ways, I miss it, and yet, I don't.

I miss the busyness of constantly having something to do.

I miss the get-it-done spirit that comes with meeting fast approaching deadlines.

I miss the constant laughter of the cast and crew.

I miss the way of life that I've adjusted to over the past few months.

... and yet.

I'm thankful to be able to think straight again.

To be living with just a little less stress is amazing.

I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed being able to get more then three hours of sleep in a night.

I'm thankful for the time to refocus on other aspects of my life.

I'm thankful for the time to build the new friendships I have made.

It's going to take a while before I'm used to "life-after-the-play" again... But I know that it will happen and for the moment, I'll just appreciate the quiet and relish the memories.

The Girl Behind the Blog - Right Now I am ....

I'm taking strides to get back into the swing of blogging immediately, now that the play is finished.  Since my brain appears to be occupied else where for the moment, I'm going to take the easy way out and do another one of these. I'm noticing two repeat trends... All the pictures of me seem to be with my dog, Lily and she always looks so innocent when in reality she was being a little monster.

Quilting Projects in the Works

Back over the summer when I was working on sewing quilting projects regularly,  I started working on a design for a patchwork star quilt. I finished the top and I loved it. Unfortunately with play and all the other projects that I've been working on, I still haven't gotten around to finishing that quilt. It still needs to be quilted and have the binding put on.... But that's another post for another day.  In the mean time I came across some fabric that I LOVED and decided that I wanted to see if I could make a simplified version of the same quilt.

Theatre And Misunderstood Bad Guys

In this year's production of Hound of the Baskervilles,  I'm the bad guy. Not that I'm acting, I never spend any time on the stage. But, I think if you were to look up "Misunderstood Villain" you would probably find "Student Theatre Director" as one of the first entries. Sigh. With all of the nagging, and correcting, and "take-it-from-the-beginning-ing,'' I'm always surprised that I don't have a full scale mutiny on my hands by end of the production.

'I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers. It would be terrible if we just skipped from September to November, wouldn't it? Look at these maple branches. Don't they give you a thrill--several thrills?" - Anne of Green Gables
Just popping in very quickly to say that life is extremely crazy at the moment with play prep and work, but I did manage to take some foliage pictures around the farm where I nanny while I was out enjoying a perfectly gorgeous day.

Recipe - Chocolate Strawberry Banana Smoothie

Two posts in a week, wow. This doesn't happen very often these days. It probably wouldn't be happening now, except for the fact that I'm sick and have been taking it easy in the hopes of a quick recuperation. As much as I love my part-time nanny job, which I do, the under six year old crowd is almost guaranteed to share every cold and bug that they happen to get. With a yucky cold I was looking for something cold and soothing for my sore throat.

A Post in Which I Don't Know What to Write About.

Hello World! I'm popping in for a quick minute to write about I don't know what. Honestly the last couple of weeks have flown by and while this nanny is temporarily enjoy a moment of quiet, I figured it was a great opportunity to sit down and get a blog post hammered out.  So here's what's been going on lately.

Another Update on the Play

As we're getting ready to head into our fifth week of rehearsals this week, it seemed appropriate to take a look at some of the different aspects that go into creating a production. Acting is just a tiny part of what brings a play to life. Everything that the audience sees on stage, that adds to the story has to be developed to fit and make sense with acting.

The Girl Behind the Blog: Right Now I'm...

Today I'm being a little on the lazy side. I've been meaning to get my blog updated, but I honestly haven't known what to write about.  So I decided to do another " Right Now I'm" post.

Production Journal: Week 3 - The Things You'll Never Get to See, Hopefully

I love being able to work with my theater group. It's such an amazing opportunity to work with these kids and get to be able to put together this production. Believe it or not, the production doesn't start off being a seamless show in which everyone knows their lines, their blocking and does it effortlessly with the perfect emotion and expression. That's absolutely shocking, isn't it?!?!

Summer Color

I'm trying very hard not to let a week go by without posting, because I know very well, if I get out of the habit I'll start having months between posts again. With all of the craziness of the past week I'm finding that blogging is not what's demanding the most of my time, surprise, surprise. So probably over the next couple of months blog posts will be slowing down significantly, but hopefully not coming to a complete stand still.

This morning I was able to go out and spend some time enjoying the flowers that are still in their peak season. With our bees this year, we tried to get a wide variety flowers that we knew the bees would be attracted to.  Needless to say they are gorgeous right now and it was extremely enjoyable to get to spend some time out enjoying them with my camera. Sadly my pictures don't begin to do them justice.

Super Yummy Chocolate Zucchini Brownies ~ Our Favorite Recipe

Every year we always end up with waaaaay too much zucchini. It's a blessing and an interesting culinary challenge all rolled into one. After years of trying to figure out what to do with it all, we've come up with some great recipes to, shall we say, hide it in plain sight.  Personally, my family doesn't mind having zucchini mixed into things, but we know a lot of people who do. That being said, this is a great recipe to use up some of those extra squashes without anyone knowing that it's in there.

Weekly Theatre Update: Part 2

Here we are with our second rehearsal behind us and things are beginning to take shape! I can't even begin to say how excited I am about how well things are going thus far. Starting this week we are focusing on blocking. Blocking is the specific movements during each scene; where the actors move on stage and the actions that bring the story together. The blocking in a scene is anything from a characters entrances and exits, to the usage of props and, something we began focusing on this week, stage fighting.

Good Morning Granola ~ Recipe

We enjoy our granola in the morning (or any time really). It's a nice healthy food, but buying it in the store is expensive and what are all of those crazy sounding ingredients listed on the back?? All the way around, it just worked better for us to make our own, it's so much more cost effective and in the long run way healthier too.

Hello Theatre Season!

Dress rehearsal for our 2013 show, The Scarlet Pimpernel
The time has come, once again, for our theater group to begin preparing for our fall production. I love this time of the year. Rehearsals are just beginning and this is when the creativity begins to be unleashed.

Nope, I Haven't Fallen Off the Face of the Earth

Oh my, so much for my goal of updating my blog twice a week!
It's not for want of things to blog about or even the desire to blog. It's been a complete lack of time sit down and do it. I've been crazy busy the past couple of weeks with production prep, gardening, company, auditions, sewing, work..... Life's just been zipping past before I've had time to sit down and get anything written.  So this is just a quick post to pop in and say I will be blogging again... SOON! And I will have a lot to write about, but for the mean time. The blog takes a back seat.... Again.

The Garden Patch in Pictures

I love gardening. A good friend of mine has a picture on her refrigerator that says something to the affect of, "Gardening is cheaper than therapy... and you get tomatoes." I had to laugh when I saw it, because it really is so true. There is nothing like going out and pulling weeds and enjoying the produce you've worked so hard to grow. As we've been out puttering away in our garden, I've been enjoying snapping away with my camera. I'm finally getting downloading them onto my computer and these are just a few of the pictures from the past few days.

Taking Time to Stop and Smell the Ponies

The picture a little blurry because it was starting to get dark
Ah... Summer.... The time of year when our garden is starting to take off and the weather isn't too terrible to spend time outside. It's a good time of the year, though I can't say I'm a big fan of the hot temps we've been having over the past few days. This summer I've been enjoying hanging out with my "pony" (technically he's a very small horse, since he doesn't quiet fall under the designated pony height.)

Confessions of a Perfectionist

I have to admit it, I'm a perfectionist.

I struggle with the idea of failure, which I know isn't an uncommon problem. It's a big problem though when everything, that's even slightly less than 100% perfection is only too likely to be deemed a complete and utter failure. Even it's only a percent or two off from perfection.
